About me and why I became a massage therapist
In 2019, after 15 years working as a bicycle mechanic lifting bikes into workstands and pushing tools all day long, my shoulders were giving me constant grief, and not only while working but also while sleeping. It got to the point where I couldn’t raise my arm at all and I had to take time off work. However, even with a week of rest the problem did not go away and came back with a vengeance once I started working again. A friend gave me The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies which led me to discover that I had trigger points (hyper-irritable spots) in my rotator cuff muscles. After several months of professional massage and self treatments of these trigger points the shoulder pain was gone and I was able to get on with daily activities. Further study revealed I had trigger points in my hip muscles which would occasionally flare up and make it painful to walk. I now had some rudimentary knowledge and tools to deal with this common but debilitating type of muscle pain, and a passion for learning more.
I started doing massage exchanges through the Massage Exchange website to get some experience. It was hit and miss, but I met one former therapist who set the benchmark for what a massage could achieve and inspired me to continue developing my practice. I completed a beginner’s weekend course with Discover Massage Australia and started welcoming my first clients to my home based clinic. Finally I decided I wanted to make a career as a massage therapist and enrolled in a diploma of remedial massage with Q Academy and got the education in anatomy and physiology (amongst many other things) that is essential to giving accurate and pressure sensitive massage – the difference between average and excellent massage.
